What Are Veneers?

Veneers are tooth-shaped dental prostheses. They’re intended to help cover up cosmetic imperfections in your smile by fitting perfectly over your teeth and replacing the front chewing surfaces with a bright, durable porcelain material. Essentially, veneers completely replace the front of your smile, covering up just about any imperfections ranging from serious tooth stains to gaps.

What Can I Expect From The Veneer Treatment Process?
What Can I Expect From The Veneer Treatment Process?

The process of getting veneers at DK Dental Care usually takes two appointments after you’ve been approved for treatment. At your first appointment, Dr. Keeling will clean and numb your mouth, and remove a small amount of enamel from each tooth that is being treated. Enamel is removed to make sure that your veneers fit perfectly.

After this, dental impressions are taken and sent to a lab where your veneers will be created. In the meantime, you’ll be sent home with a set of temporary veneers. When your permanent veneers arrive at DK Dental Care, Dr. Keeling will check each one to make sure that it fits perfectly, then bond them into place using dental cement. Finally, your new smile will be buffed and polished, and you’ll leave our office with an enhanced, beautiful smile!

Am I A Good Candidate For Veneers?

In most cases, patients who have healthy mouths but are suffering from cosmetic issues are great candidates for veneers. There are only a few exceptions. If your teeth are crooked, for example, you may need braces or Invisalign before you can have veneers. Similarly, if you have a decayed tooth or gum disease, you will need to seek the appropriate treatment to restore your oral health before you can have veneers.

How Do I Care For My Veneers?

With proper care, veneers can easily last 15+ years. First and foremost, it’s important to brush twice per day for 2 minutes and floss once per day. Avoid biting extremely hard foods (ice, nuts, etc.) with your veneers, as this can damage them. Try not to chew non-food objects such as pens and fingernails, and don’t use your teeth as tools to open bags or packages. If you grind your teeth, get a night guard to protect your veneers from damage.

How Do I care For My Veneers?
Are Veneers Safe? Yes!

Veneers are one of the safest, minimally-invasive cosmetic dental procedures. They have an extremely high success rate and the only relatively common side effect of veneers is tooth sensitivity.
Treatment with veneers involves removing a small layer of your natural enamel. After your teeth are prepared, you’ll wear temporary veneers to protect your teeth while your permanent veneers are made, and your teeth may feel more sensitive during this time.

Can Veneers Be Removed?

No. Veneers are not removable since a thin layer (0.5mm or less) of your natural enamel must be removed by Dr. Keeling to prepare for their placement.
This enamel must be removed to make room for your veneers and ensure that they do not make your teeth look or feel bulky. In addition, trimming the teeth before placing veneers ensures a more even, strong hold for the veneer when it’s bonded into place with dental cement.
Once you have had them placed, you must commit to wearing veneers for the rest of your life, and you must have any damaged, dislodged, or cracked veneers repaired to ensure your teeth remain healthy.
If you don’t like the idea of a non-reversible treatment with veneers, an alternative cosmetic procedure like dental bonding at DK Dental Care be a better option for you.

Do Veneers Strengthen Teeth?

Yes! Once your veneers have been placed, your teeth will be just as strong (if not stronger) than they were before they were trimmed. Since they are made of tooth-colored porcelain, they are also stain-resistant. This means that veneers not only enhance your appearance, but they can also strengthen your smile!

Do Veneers Stain or need cleaning?

Porcelain is a strong, non-porous ceramic material, and it cannot be stained by things like drinking coffee or tea, or by tobacco use. If you get porcelain veneers, they will never stain.
However, it’s important to note that the cement used to bond your porcelain veneers to your teeth can become stained, in some cases, and the teeth that haven’t had veneers are also susceptible to staining. This means that it is still critical to make sure you care for your teeth properly to avoid staining, even if you have porcelain veneers.
